England defeat in the Czech Republic could have been down into several players heading into the worldwide break in club shape, based on Harry Maguire.
After the 2-0 defeat of Friday, England have conceded eight goals in the previous five matches. In that time, Southgate has just selected the back.
Maguire, who performed Danny Rose Michael Keane and Kieran Trippier in Prague, has been the mainstay from the defence because November and is keen to find a back .
Asked if there was a shortage of confidence among the back-line Maguire replied:Yes, possibly.
We bring our club soccer into global level. It was a game. Do not get me wrong, we started cluttered. We took the lead at the match but we didnt deserve to.
The second half we controlled the game a lot more compared to the first half we gave them a messy goal to win the match. We do need to improve on this.
Clearly you are wanting to create partnerships. Occasionally in international level you cant actually do that.
You have players who arent playing with their clubs so that they do not get chosen, and youve got players who pick up injuries.
You have got to accommodate. That is one of those sections of playing each camp you playing with players that are different, football – that you dont wish to be – and also will need to create partnerships.
But listen, theres no explanations. We will need to become better than Friday night. We need to be going forward. We need to be better over the ball. And we surely will need to be better in keeping the ball from the internet.
England might have sealed their qualification having a win on Friday for Euro 2020. However they could still be eligible on Monday when they beat Bulgaria and Kosovo fail to win against Montenegro.
Southgate had success with England at the Russia World Cup in 2018 – carrying them to a in 28 years using a three and admits he can revert to this system.
I believe we are in a tricky situation concerning the players that have played international soccer with us at that area of the pitch and who are playing frequently together with their clubs, Southgate said.
So, thats part of the reason why we didnt do this [from the Czech Republic].
Its definitely something we have considered and that I dont think we could dismiss.
Im not sure, ahead of Monday, if thats the right thing to do but were very conscious and assessing those things
Asked if there is enough time to implement a defensive switch in method before Euro 2020, Southgate stated:I believe , I think players take in tactical concepts very fast, particularly players.
So, we must keep reflecting on whats working, what is potential and learn from every experience we have.
Well find out a lot from [the Czech game]. Weve had games which havent challenged us.
[This] was a proper test and we did not come through, so it would be naive to take the lessons in what weve observed on the pitch.
